As we welcome our readers to Volume 65, Issue 2, 2024 of the Revista Portuguesa de Estomatologia, Medicina Dentária e Cirurgia Maxilofacial, we are delighted to present a diverse array of research papers and clinical case reports that contribute significantly to the dental fields of Preventive Health Care, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Pathology, and Oral Surgery.

This issue showcases the innovation and dedication of our contributors, reflecting the ongoing advancements and clinical challenges in Dentistry. Here, we highlight the noteworthy studies and case reports featured in this edition.

The original research paper “Young Portuguese adults’ perception of mobile apps for motivation to oral health care”¹ explores the attitudes of Portuguese young adults towards mobile applications designed to enhance oral health care motivation in an era where digital technology pervades every aspect of life. The study provides valuable insights into how digital tools can be leveraged to promote better oral health practices among the youth, highlighting the potential of mobile apps to serve as effective adjuncts in their dental health education and behavior modification.

The research paper “Oral health status and oral habits: a study on 33 rare diseases”² is a pioneering study that investigates the oral health status and habits of individuals with 33 rare diseases. By shedding light on the unique oral health challenges faced by this underserved population, the research underscores the importance of personalized dental care approaches.

The findings call for heightened awareness and specialized treatment protocols to address the specific needs of patients with rare diseases, ensuring they receive comprehensive care.

The clinical case report “Management of additional roots in mandibular molars: report of radix entomolaris and radix paramolaris cases”³ addresses the significant challenges that complex root canal anatomies pose in root canal treatment procedures. This case report discusses the management of additional roots in mandibular molars, specifically focusing on cases of radix entomolaris and radix paramolaris. Through detailed clinical descriptions and imaging, the report provides practical guidance for dental practitioners on identifying and managing these anatomical variations to ensure successful endodontic outcomes.

The report “3D-printed CAD/CAM complete dentures – case report”⁴ evidences how innovation in dental technology is transforming traditional practices. The report outlines the process and benefits of utilizing 3D-printing technology in complete denture fabrication, demonstrating its potential to improve accuracy, customization, and patient comfort. This case exemplifies what may be the future of Prosthodontics, where digital fabrication techniques enhance both clinical efficiency and patient satisfaction.

The paper “White sponge nevus of the oral mucosa – case report”⁵ debates the pathological condition of white sponge nevus as a rare hereditary condition affecting the oral mucosa.

This case report presents a detailed account of the diagnosis and management of this pathology, offering insights into its clinical presentation and histopathological features. The report emphasizes the importance of recognizing this benign condition to differentiate it from other potentially malignant oral lesions, thus guiding an appropriate clinical approach.

The clinical case report “An unusual case of peripheral osteoma in a young patient”⁶ highlights clinical cases of peripheral osteomas that can be seen as uncommon benign osteogenic tumors. This case report details the diagnosis, surgical management, and follow-up of a peripheral osteoma in a young patient. The discussion highlights the clinical features, radiographic appearance, and treatment considerations, providing a comprehensive overview that enhances understanding and management of such rare entities in clinical practice.

At last, the case report “Descompressão de cisto radicular associado à cirurgia paraendodôntica: relato de caso”⁷ (Decompression of radicular cyst associated with paraendodontic surgery: a case report) addresses radicular cysts, which are common inflammatory jaw cysts often associated with non-vital teeth. This case report describes the decompression technique combined with endodontic surgery for the management of a large radicular cyst. The report illustrates the procedural steps and outcomes, showcasing an effective approach to preserving tooth structure and promoting cyst resolution.

This issue of the Revista Portuguesa de Estomatologia, Medicina Dentária e Cirurgia Maxilofacial reflects the dynamic nature of Dental Medicine research and practice. The original research papers provide critical insights into emerging trends and unique patient needs, while the clinical case reports offer valuable lessons from real-world scenarios.
