It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Stomatology, Dental Medicine and Maxillofacial Surgery (Revista Portuguesa de Estomatologia, Medicina Dentária e Cirurgia Maxilofacial).

I succeed Professor Jaime Portugal, who has served this jornal for three decades and is now passing the torch.1 I receive that trust with humbleness and gratitude.

Under his leadership, the journal matured alongside our profession and the wider scientific community. A sustained effort towards internationalization — open-access online publication, uncompromising rigor in the peer-review process, and indexing in prestigious databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and SciELO — has given our authors and clinicians far greater visibility. To the best of our knowledge, this remains the only Portuguese journal in the field of oral health with a Journal Impact Factor in the Web of Science. The transition to English-only publications, adopted at the beginning of 2025, consolidated the journal’s place in the global scientific landscape.

None of this was the achievement of a single person; it was a collective effort built over many years.

That recognition is owed to all who made it possible: the authors, who entrusted us with their work; the reviewers, whose anonymous and rigorous assessment is the cornerstone of our credibility; the readers; the Scientific Board and Associate Editors; the Linguistic Editor; the publisher; and the successive Boards of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Estomatologia e Medicina Dentária (SPEMD). To Professor Jaime Portugal and each of them, I extend my sincere gratitude, and I count on their continued commitment as we embark on this new chapter.

My first commitment is one of continuity. The scientific rigor, editorial independence, and methodological standards that brought the journal to this point — supported by the established reporting guidelines — will remain the basis of our editorial decisions.

Continuity, however, is not stagnation. A central priority of this cycle will be to reduce our editorial response times, from submission to decision and from acceptance to publication, without any concession in the rigor that defines us. This objective depends directly on our reviewers, whose contribution we intend to support and to recognize more visibly. In parallel, we will work to consolidate the journal’s indexation and international reach and to keep it aligned with contemporary editorial practice, including open-science principles and author identification through ORCID. I invite our authors and reviewers to continue building this journal with us, honoring the trust placed in our leadership.
